Domaine Kundrat et Fils
Burgundy, France

Renowned around the world, the region of Bourgogne (also known as Burgundy) was at the top of the list of our Vinum Masters team of sommeliers when searching across Europe for the very finest terroir, history, and winemaking heritage.

Ever since European wines have been available internationally, consumers have been enchanted by the wines of Bourgogne. The Napoleonic laws of inheritance mean that property (including vineyards) must be shared amongst the inheritors, which means that the vineyard can reduce in size (sometimes dramatically) with each generation. This has left some grape growers in Bourgogne with a couple of rows of vines or even just a few vines, which makes family-owned wineries that are still producing wonderful wines incredibly rare!

Burgundy sets itself apart with its very definite winemaking approach. Exclusively varietal wines (made from one single type of grape) from Pinot Noir (red wines) and Chardonnay (white wines).

Bourgogne is divided into 5 main regions. Chablis, The Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Maconnais. Our team of sommeliers tasted dozens of wines from Bourgogne looking for exceptional winemaking before deciding on Domaine Kundrat et Fils, which sources their grapes in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Maconnais. These southern appellations have the same soils as the Côte de Beaune, but the vineyards are much less crowded.

The history of the Kundrat et Fils estate dates back to the 19th century with Philippe Kundrat’s great-great-grandfather, when the estate was named Domaine Camus. The work at Domaine Kundrat et Fils is carried out with maximum protection to the environment, respecting the soil by never using synthetic products but always in accordance with an organic approach.

For the Vinum Masters Bourgogne, the harvested grapes are carefully transported to the winery to undergo a quick and very gentle pressing to ensure that the juices run clear. Fermentation occurs 20% in barrels and 80% in tanks, and the aging lasts for 8 months.

Our Vinum Masters Bourgogne displays yellow apple, pear, and white floral notes. Bright and fresh on the palate, with an inimitably smooth richness and roundness, followed by a sustained finish.

This wine has just the finest touch of oak ageing, so it pairs well with many dishes. Lighter meats such as pork and fish are perfect, crustaceans, shellfish and charcuterie work well too.
