DOCa Rioja Crianza

Bodegas y Viñedos Tritium
Rioja Alta, Spain

Our journey into the European wine scene took us into the region of La Rioja, in the north of Spain, with a long history of winemaking.

Over five generations of winemaking heritage have meant that Bodegas Tritium have protected their vineyards from the ravages of modernism and economics. Two periods in history resulted in most vineyards in Rioja uprooting their vines. The race for mechanization in the 60s and 70s meant that many vineyards uprooted lots of old vines, and in the 80s and 90s the relentless demand for wines from Rioja led to winemakers uprooting old vines and replanting with younger, higher-yielding vines. Bodegas Tritium, however, kept their 100 year-old vines and their commitment to quality over quantity.

Our Vinum Masters Rioja Crianza is a 100% Tempranillo with a beautiful light cherry hue which hides layers of fresh dark fruit, blueberries, black plums and cedar. It is medium bodied and smooth with round tannins, well integrated oak and a spiced fruit finish.

Maturation is key in Rioja, and although historically American oak was the favoured wood for barrel aging, as it provides soft vanilla flavours, winemakers have started to turn increasingly to French oak for a more modern style. Joven is the term used for young wines with no oak aging, and Crianza means that the wine has spent at least 12 months maturing in oak barrels.

The highest quality designation available in Spain is DOCa, which stands for Denominación de Origen Calificada. Rioja was the first region in Spain to achieve this designation in 1991, followed by Priorat in 2002.

The region is named after the rio (river) Oja, a tributary of the river Ebro in the north-east of Spain, and is divided into 3 key parts: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, and Rioja Alavesa. Many grape varieties are grown here, but the dominant variety is Tempranillo. Most Riojas are blends of multiple grape varieties, but our Vinum Masters Rioja Crianza is made exclusively using the old vine Tempranillo.

Ideal pairings would include grilled pork chops with chorizo and rice, and if you’re looking for something special, try grilled pigeon with white truffle.
