Chianti DOCG Riserva

Azienda Agricola Piandaccoli
Tuscany, Italy

The region of Tuscany in Italy was an obligatory stop for our Vinum Masters sommeliers in their search for European heritage fine winemaking. Tales of the Piandaccoli wine estate date back to the year 1000. It is located on the Via Francigena where it was originally a hostel for pilgrims making the journey from Canterbury to Rome. It later became a monastery where the monks started producing wine for religious ceremonies. Since 2004, the Estate has been renewed by Giampaolo Bruni, who has been deeply invested, injecting commitment, energy, and new life into the Piandaccoli vineyards. Prior to 2004 the estate was owned by his wife’s family.

Our Vinum Masters Chianti Riserva is intense ruby red in colour with notes of cherry, black pepper, and nutmeg. Smooth and fresh on the palate, the sweet tannins balance a pleasant warmth, followed by a long aromatic finish with balsamic notes. Wines from Chianti must contain at least 70% Sangiovese but can be blended with other grapes. Our Vinum Masters Chianti Riserva could be considered a pure example of traditional approach as even if it is unblended, containing 100% Sangiovese, it comes from 7 different clones grown in multiple vineyards, in combinations with 5 different kinds of soil. An extreme flavoured, complex and balanced Chianti.

Maturation is a vital part of winemaking. Sangiovese has a bright red fruit character and must be carefully aged depending on the character of the wine each year. Different vintages vary in acidity, tannins and alcohol, so a flexible approach to barrel aging is key. Our Chianti has been gently aged for 12 months in large French oak barrels first, and 4 years in bottle after, to add complexity but keeping the fresh fruit character which defines the wine.

The most prestigious wine regions in Italy are classified as DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). DOCG is a term reserved exclusively for the highest quality wines in Italy and only 74 geographically limited areas have the right to use this term on their label. Chianti is located between Florence and Siena in this historic region, and is one of the most iconic wine styles of not just Italy, but the world of wine as a whole.

Vinum Masters Chianti Riserva allows for many exciting food pairings, such as a classic Italian meatball and vegetable soup, but a hearty rustic paella would work every bit as well.
